Published in 2009 by Arcadia Press. The Marin Headlands, located between the Pacific Ocean and Richardson’s Bay just north of the Golden Gate, had been used during the 19th and 20th centuries by the governments of Spain, Mexico and the United States for military defense. Cattlemen grazed their herds on the verdant hills and valleys and in 1970 developers attempted to establish a city for 25,000, but were defeated. In 1972, the U.S. Congress transferred the Marin Headlands to the National Park Service for inclusion in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The story is told in seven chapters of narrated photographs about everything from geology and hiking to ranching and Nike Missile Sites. $20.
